Simple Sudoku Solving Guide

Please note: this solving guide assumes that you are aware of the basic solving techniques of a Sudoku. It also relies on the fact that you will read about the patterns described in sudocue and sudokuwiki.

Preparations

  • Read the following two sites extensively: Sudocue.net, Sudokuwiki.org
  • Grab a good erasable pen like a Pilot Frixion
  • Grab the Sudoku you want to solve
  • Sit in a comfortable chair

A. Orientation phase

A1. Search for solutions for numbers 1 to 9 using basic Sudoku solving skills eg.

  • Scan lines for missing single numbers
  • Make virtual lines and fill empty spaces

A2. Then search through each RCS’s (Rows Columns Squares).

Repeat the steps in the Orientation phase until no number has been found in a complete cycle of the steps.

B. Little numbers phase

B1. Enter all possible locations for 1s, scanning with patterns:

  • X-Wing / Finned X-Wing
  • Swordfish / Jellyfish
  • Color Trap / Wrap / Wing

B2. Repeat step B1 for numbers 2 to 9.

Repeat the steps in phase B until no new solutions or rubbing out of little numbers have occurred in a complete cycle of the steps.

C. Finishing off

Scan for combination of numbers with the following patterns:

C1. XY-Wing and XYZ-Wing

C2. Pairs and Uniqueness

C3. Medusa Trap / Wrap / Bridge

Repeat the steps in phase C until no new solutions or rubbing out of little numbers have occurred in a complete cycle of the steps.

D. Rinse and repeat:

  • A1
  • A2
  • Patterns of B1
  • Patterns of C

Repeat the steps in phase D until no new solutions or rubbing out of little numbers have occurred in a complete cycle of the steps.
